Foreign trade in goods
of the Republic of Belarus
January-August 2008
According to the customs committee statistics* in January-August 2008 international trade of the Republic of Belarus amounted to $51.1 billion, up 57.2% over January-August 2007. The trade with the CIS countries totaled $29.2 billion (57.2% of the total trade), up 59.9% from January-August 2007. Trade with the non-CIS countries ramped up by 53.7% to $21.9 billion.

In January-August 2008, Belarus had a foreign trade deficit of $3.3 billion (in January-August 2007 the deficit was $2.4 billion). The deficit of the trade with the CIS countries came to $8.5 billion (in January-August 2007 the deficit was $4.5 billion). A surplus in the trade with the non-CIS countries reached $5.2 billion (in January-August 2006 a surplus was $2.1 billion).
Exports of the Republic of Belarus were up 58.6% over the same period 2007 to $23.9 billion.
Exports to the CIS surged by 50.6% to $10.3 billion.
Exports to the non-CIS countries were up 65.4% to $13.5 billion.
Imports of the Republic of Belarus increased by 56% this year to $27.2 billion
Imports from the CIS countries were up 65.5% to $18.8 billion
Imports from the non-CIS countries were up by 38% to $8.4 billion

Belarus increased trade with Russia (up $9 billion), Ukraine (up $1.8 billion), the Netherlands (up $1.4 billion), Latvia (up $1 billion), Poland (up $921.7 million), Brazil (up $856.9 million), Germany ($562.1 million), China ($294.1 million).
Trade with the Russian Federation was up 57.1% from January-August 2007 to $24.7 billion; a deficit reached $9.6 billion. Exports were up 37.5%, imports 67.6%.
Trade with Ukraine was up 98.4% to $3.5 billion; a surplus came to $623.6 million. Exports were up 2.6 times, imports 49.9%.
Trade with Kazakhstan was up $18.1 million from January-August 2007 to $370.1 million; a surplus was $106.6 million; exports were down $8.5 million.
Belarus had a surplus in trade with other CIS countries.
Trade with Moldova picked up by $103.8 million to $247.4 million; with Uzbekistan by $41.9 million to $110.1 million. Azerbaijan by $24.1 million to $79 million. Trade with Turkmenistan was down $32.6 million.
Trade with the non-CIS countries accounted for 42.8% of the total trade of the Republic of Belarus.
Trade with the EU countries was up 52.4% up over January-August 2007 to $15.8 billion (31% of the total trade of the Republic of Belarus). Exports increased 61.8% to $10.5 billion; imports were up 36.9% up to $5.3 billion.
Trade with the WTO member–states was up 56.6% over January-August 2007 to $21.6 billion (42.3% of the total trade of the Republic of Belarus). Exports were up by 66.9% to $13.6 billion; imports were up 41.8% to $8 billion.
Belarus’ major non-CIS trading partners are the Netherlands, Germany, Poland, Latvia, Great Britain, Brazil, China.
